At Holy Cross, we have a very good selection of books throughout school from a wide variety of authors and genres. Books at Holy Cross are banded into colours for the various levels of reading abilities and each class has a mixture of various reading materials suitable to the children that are in those classes.
Children are allocated a book colour and these are the books that challenge the reader in their required areas of learning. Children tend to take two books home in Reception and Key Stage 1 to share with family members. Children are regularly checked in school by teachers and teaching assistants to ensure that they are on the correct reading book for their ability.
Children in Key Stage 2 also have allocated book colours and are regularly checked to ensure they are reading at the correct level.
It is important at Holy Cross, that the children have a good understanding of what they are reading, so therefore be are able to talk about the story, predict endings, answer questions and use inference and relate to personal experiences.
