Summer Half Term Letter - Monday 12th April 2010

April 2010 – Half Term 1
Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the new school year. We hope you all had a wonderful Easter break. We have lots of exciting things planned for this term. Our topic for the first half term is ‘Healthy, Wealthy and Wise’. We hope to organise a few visitors and trip linked to this topic for this half term and will notify you nearer the time.

Literacy
This term we are concentrating on Unit 3 Information Texts’ and Unit 1 ‘Poems to perform for the first half term. We aim to make the children’s learning real, exciting and relevant.

Spellings will be sent home for your child to practise on Mondays, for a test on Fridays. These spellings will be linked to specific strands of the literacy curriculum. These spellings are found every week on our class page on the school website www.holycrossschoolhucknall.com

Please continue to read regularly with your child as this greatly improves your child’s progress in all areas of the curriculum. We try to have your child read to an adult at school at least once week, however time is always a constraint, if any parents are free and willing to come and listen to children read, please let us know. All help is greatly appreciated. We have also introduced a new incentive in our class to ensure the children are reading regularly. Each morning we plan to collect in the reading diaries and for a monitor to check who has read the previous evening or that morning. The children are encouraged to read anything suitable for them, if they do not wish to read their school reading book that evening. However whatever has been read needs to be documented and recorded in their diaries.

Numeracy
In numeracy this term we will be covering a variety of topics including:
  • Counting, portioning and calculating
  • Securing number facts and understanding shape
  • Handling data and measures
The children are usually tested on certain times tables every Friday morning and each half term we will give the children a timed mental maths test to help prepare them for future testing in key stage two.

Religious Education
We follow the religious education programme for Catholic primary school. This term we will be covering a variety of topics including:
-         Messengers/Witnesses
-         Change

Science
For the first half term we plan to finish off the QCA unit3A Teeth and eating and then move to a suitable spring unit 3B Helping plants grow well. These units fit well with our topic for the first half term.

Humanities
We plan to do History for the first half term, concentrating on the History unit 9 – What it was like for children in the Second World War. We plan to concentrate on the health of an evacuee, which fits in with our topic. If you have any information, please send it into school.

I.C.T
This term we will be focusing on Unit 3A – Combining text and graphics, mainly through Literacy and Humanities. I.C.T will also be incorporated into most other subject areas.

Design Technology and Art
This term we will be concentrating on Design and Technology and will be following the QCA unit 3B – Sandwich Snacks. We plan to make a lot of different healthy lunchbox snacks to promote healthy eating and links with our topic.

French
This will be taught once a week and encouraged throughout all lessons when appropriate. The children will be learning about meal times following the QCA unit 13 – Bon appétit (Enjoy your Meal). Please encourage your children to speak the language at home as well.

P.E
Our P.E days are Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Please ensure that on these days your children are not wearing any jewellery and have full, appropriate kit. If earrings are unable to be taken out, please provide your child with plasters to cover their ears. As the weather will hopefully be improving we may wish to go outside. You may want to provide your child with suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.

Homework
Homework will be sent out every Friday to be returned the following Tuesday. Please ensure that your child brings their completed homework in on time. Homework can usually be found on our class page of the website.

If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us and arrange a time where we can discuss your child’s progress.

Yours sincerely,

Miss. N. Underwood and Mrs. L. Dennis
